Mayte Piera: the emotional gaze

After graduating in Audiovisual Information Sciences, Mayte Piera developed the specialty of architectural photography, combining her activity as a photographer with teaching. In fact, he has recently teamed up with two colleagues to open Espacio Modotti, an audiovisual creation center and photography school in Valencia. In the workshops she teaches, she tries to get students to approach her discipline from an emotional perspective, paying attention to the sensations transmitted by the spaces.

Her other passion is landscape photography, which she understands as a way to talk about the world around her. In this area, his works seek both nature in its pure state, and the mark that man leaves on it.

Tabacalera Penthouse, by Álvaro Navarro Estudio

This apartment, designed by the architects of Álvaro Navarro Estudio, is located next to the Turia riverbed, the green lung that forms the backbone of the city of Valencia. The dining room and living room share a large and open space to which, through large sliding doors, the kitchen is joined, in which the black island contrasts with the rest of the white furnishings. The combination of natural materials, enhanced by careful lighting, contributes to a warm and pleasant atmosphere.

Housing R, by Hernández Arquitectos

Housing R, designed by Hernández Arquitectos, has two entrances generated by a 3-metre-high difference in level, which give rise to an interesting combination of volumes and heights. A succession of walls made of dry masonry partially embraces the white volume, giving rise to a set of planes that are progressively revealed as one approaches the building.

The walls, joined by an aged curved tile roof, create a large porch that connects the house with the garden. The combination of stone, wood and pieces in neutral tones transforms this space into a versatile living area that, in addition to extending the interior living room, functions as a dining room attached to the kitchen. The integration of the different environments is enhanced by the flooring, which provides visual uniformity to the whole.

RC Housing, by Hernández Arquitectos

The RC Housing is located in the Eixample district, in the heart of Valencia. The intervention of Hernández Arquitectos has maintained the high ceilings throughout the house, thus preserving one of the essential features of the constructions in this area.

Inside, the layout establishes a clear distinction between private and public areas. The living room, dining room and kitchen merge into an open-plan and bright common space, in which the trees of the avenue overlooking the building form a natural backdrop. The neutral tones and different textures give a marked personality to the environment, while giving it a very cozy touch.

Casa Colón, by Mariano Dexeus and Cerveró Obras

Casa Colón is a 227-square-metre apartment that occupies the fourth floor of a building dating back to 1970, located on the most important commercial artery in Valencia. After a spectacular refurbishment, carried out by the architect Mariano Dexeus and the Cerveró Obras company, its layout includes an entrance hall, corridor, kitchen, dining room, living room, three suites, a dressing room and a terrace. All the rooms, except for the wet rooms, have been covered with natural wood flooring, the same material with which a dividing parabán has been created between the hall and the living room.

Access to the kitchen is through two glass doors, one located in the dining room and the other in the hallway, which helps to generate free movement through the house. In the kitchen, of more than 25 square meters, the large central peninsula covered in Corian stands out, around which the rest of the white lacquered furniture is organized.

BJ Housing, by Hernández Arquitectos

The comprehensive refurbishment of this flat, carried out by Hernández Arquitectos, is characterised by a millimetric organisation of the floor plan, with the living room and dining room acting as an articulating space, and the bedrooms distributed symmetrically on each of its sides.

The minimalist lines of the architecture coexist harmoniously with multiple textures and nuances, such as the slatted panelling of the entrance, the mouldings or the floor recovered from Nolla mosaic. Using a contemporary language, the intervention has managed to create a calm and balanced atmosphere.
