The owners of this home, a couple with two children aged 12 and 18, planned their comprehensive renovation from the kitchen, the family’s favorite space to meet and spend time together.
History, character and bohemian spirit

The apartment, located in an eighteenth-century building built in the heart of Rennes (Brittany, France), was in a poor state of conservation. In addition, its irrational distribution made it narrow, uncomfortable and dark.
The new tenants assumed, from the outset, the need to rethink not only the interior design, but also the spaces, to transform it into a modern, comfortable and welcoming home.

Thus, the rooms were regrouped according to their function, concentrating the private areas – suite, two bedrooms and two bathrooms – in one wing of the house, and the public areas – living room, dining room and kitchen – in the opposite wing, reserving the centre of the floor for the passage areas and two offices.

The intervention carried out by Inma Studio managed to recover the most characteristic elements of the original building, such as the chimneys, the moldings, the doors and the Versailles parquet. These hallmarks are highlighted with an interior design that combines classic aspects with more modern ones, using as a common link the trio made up of black, white and wood.
The outfit is refined, elegant and casual, with a style that the designer herself defines as bohemian-chic.
The kitchen, a privileged space in the house

One of the keys to the renovation was the relocation of the kitchen, which was removed from its original place, at the entrance of the apartment, and moved to one of the most pleasant and bright rooms. To equip it, furniture designed by Santos was chosen, which, with its minimalist and contemporary style, generates an interesting contrast with the elements recovered from the construction. In addition, the purity of the lines of the furniture favours its integration into an architecture with a marked character of its own.
On the other hand, the radical simplicity of the finishes, in black and white, establishes a timeless dialogue with the tones of the fireplace, which has inspired the chromatic range of the kitchen.

The distribution of the equipment was carried out according to aesthetic and structural criteria. Only one of the four walls allowed for ambiguation, as two of them are decorated with mouldings, while the fourth is occupied by large windows. Thus, the free partition served as a base to accommodate a spectacular composition of low and high units and tall units, all with a black finish, which brings together in a very compact space the preparation, washing and appliance areas.
The rest of the kitchen is concentrated on a white island, with a countertop and sides covered in Neolith Statuario Silk to reinforce its prominence. The island brings together the cooking and preparation areas, plus multiple storage options on both sides: four base units with side opening on the outside and, on the inside, a plate holder module and a drawer unit. A wooden bar is attached to the island, which serves as a table for the family to enjoy meals and snacks.

With this planning, a comfortable, practical and versatile kitchen has been achieved, which offers high-level equipment and great capacity, all without overloading the environment or betraying the style of the house.
